Message

Do you remember the days when we could communicate with the mountains,
the ocean, the forests, the soil and the spirits of our ancestors?

Next to the bonfire, I am lying in Mother’s arms. Grandpa, Grandma, Mama and Papa sing a beautiful melody for me to hear, touching me profoundly deep inside my body, in my blood…. It’s something that can’t be seen, can’t be heard….
The voices of our elders tell us: “Don’t make fun of the weak and handicapped”
“Don’t step on the grains of millet that have fallen by the roadside.”
Where is mine, my friend? Where is my people, my history, my words of wisdom?

Are the mountains still there? Are the people who hunted in the mountains still there?
Is the sea still there? Are the people who caught fish by the coast still there?
Are the songs still there? Do we want to keep singing? How should we sing?

Do you remember the belief that wood, insects and flowing water could understand the speech of people, and the days when we could communicate with the mountains, the ocean, the forests, the soil and the spirits of our ancestors?

Music make people together
From the music we get the message

Our people can create beautiful melodies out of a sincere spirit and unique voices, using their own spiritual power to sing the true emotions of their souls. Let the gods hear the deepest feelings of our hearts, let them see the pain, suffering and love we’ve experienced.

Husluman Vava, “The Spirit of Yushan”

Music make people together
From the music we get the message
Peace. Love .no war
Message was formed in the aftermath of an event that took place in late 2007. A group of hunters from Katatipul (Zhiben) who were participating in their community’s annual hunting ceremony were stopped and aggressively interrogated by the police. This angered the people of Katatipul, who went to the Taidong county government to protest. This affair got the attention of aboriginal people all around Taiwan, and led them to demand that the government address the issue of the hunting and fishing rights of Taiwan’s aboriginal people and the overall question of indigenous sovereignty.
On February 28, 2008, in aboriginal communities all over Taiwan lit beacon fires, using the smoke from the fires to send a message to the government and to spread the word that all the communities had been offended by the incident that had taken place. On March 8, aboriginal people from around the country, at their own expense, traveled to the Presidential Office to demand that their natural sovereign rights be respected. After the protest was over and the media’s attention had turned elsewhere, the question of how to keep the fire alight and allow the voices and messages of the aboriginal community to continue to be heard, so that years of humiliation could be overcome and a new respect for the value of Taiwan’s indigenous people be established.

In order to keep the passion to achieve these goals alive, a group of like-minded individuals from the east coast of Taiwan decided to use one of the Taidong area’s best known products – music. With the diverse possibilities for expression music offered, they decided to create a band to deliver their message. Among those involved in creating the group were Halu, the chief of Adulan; the band’s leader Panai, from Uliveklivek; Dakanow, from Kavulungan; Xiao Long, from Matang; Nabu and Bion, from Laipununk; Lavakau, from Kabareranane; Gilau, a nose flute player from Talumak; Hoklo researcher Siyu and Hoklo teacher Yiqing.

Message uses the unique sounds of different aboriginal communities, combined with the frustrations of modern people to create, share and spread their message, placing the penetrating power of the human voice at the heart of the music. When using the voice for improvisation and collective creation of music, everyone has to have the self-confidence to naturally and honestly express themselves, so that their voice can maintain its identity and be heard in the midst of many others, together creating a glorious sound.
